Depression

Experiencing depression does not always look the same. Some of the symptoms can be:

  • Persistent sad, anxious or empty feelings
  • Feeling hopelessness or pessimism
  • Poor concentration or remembering details
  • Losing interests in activities or hobbies that once gave you pleasure, including sex
  • Experiencing irritability, restlessness, or fatigue
  • Appetite change, including either overeating or appetite loss
  • Difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or sleeping too much
  • Experiencing body aches, headaches, digestive problems
  • Wanting to stop the pain, cutting and self harm
  • Thoughts of suicide or suicide attempts

There are different forms of depression and not every episode of depression will appear the same. Depression can persist for a few weeks, a few months, or many months. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is brought on by less natural light during the winter months. Depression can be very disabling and prevent a person from functioning. Talk therapy identifies the types of depression and determine effective treatment.
