Experiencing depression does not always look the same. Some of the symptoms can be:
- Persistent sad, anxious or empty feelings
- Feeling hopelessness or pessimism
- Poor concentration or remembering details
- Losing interests in activities or hobbies that once gave you pleasure, including sex
- Experiencing irritability, restlessness, or fatigue
- Appetite change, including either overeating or appetite loss
- Difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or sleeping too much
- Experiencing body aches, headaches, digestive problems
- Wanting to stop the pain, cutting and self harm
- Thoughts of suicide or suicide attempts
There are different forms of depression and not every episode of depression will appear the same. Depression can persist for a few weeks, a few months, or many months. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is brought on by less natural light during the winter months. Depression can be very disabling and prevent a person from functioning.
